We are pleased to announce our next OCE Research Seminar:

Robin Burrow – Senior Lecturer in Organization Studies at University of York will join us on February 19th to discuss his work entitled:

“Money, Morals and the Market for Violence: Contract Soldiering in the 21st Century”

Abstract: Drawing on a new oral-history project this study examines the occupational experiences of ‘contract’ (corporate) soldiers, and their role in contemporary conflicts. Theoretically, the study aims to advance our understanding of what compels ‘institutionalized’ state soldiers to work, fight and even die for private corporations; to understand how and why moral inhibitions are eroded (or sustained) in ambiguous, sometimes ‘lawless’ spaces; and to prompt new reflections on how the private security and military industry should be regulated (and those regulations enforced).

Biography: Robin is a Senior Lecturer in Organization Studies at University of York, where he is also the Deputy Director of Postgraduate Research. He completed his PhD at the University of Warwick, where he also gained an MSc in Organization Studies. Robin researches and publishes widely on the lived realities of extreme forms of work, developing specific expertise in relation to the connection between emotions and behaviour. Robin’s work has been covered extensively in the print media, on radio and television.

The event takes place in emlyon business school, at Lyon (144 avenue Jean Jaurès – 69007 Lyon) and on Teams.
